— the uncomfortable truth
Year 7 Maths: What You Don’t Realise
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the maths system in high school is flawed.
Many teachers settle for “good enough,” and students who are coasting comfortably are left unchallenged.
Over time, this builds a false sense of security — they seem ahead, but they’re actually developing bad learning habits.
And that early complacency?
It doesn’t stay hidden for long.
And that early complacency?
It doesn’t stay hidden for long.
By the time Year 10 or VCE rolls around, these same students often find themselves struggling to keep up — caught off guard by the leap in difficulty from the seemingly breezy days of Year 7.
— So ...
What Should Year 7 Maths Actually Be About?
If Year 7 Maths feels “easy,” that’s not a reason to relax —
It’s the time to lay the groundwork for long-term success.
This stage should be about:
- Building strong learning habits that last through to VCE — so students don’t just rely on being “smart,” but develop real academic resilience.
- Unlocking entry into advanced streams, which creates the opportunity to take VCE subjects early — a powerful edge for high scorers.
- Deepening understanding, not just memorising steps — because knowing the "why" is what builds lasting confidence and adaptability.
At Artin, we turn the junior years into a true head start — not a missed opportunity.
This Is Where the Gap Begins
It’s not luck. It’s what happens quietly, early, and consistently.

A Personal Message from Will
This is why we do what we do.
When I was in Year 7, I didn’t make it into the extension class.
Still, my teachers told me I was doing well—and I believed them. But while I stayed where I was, my friends in the extension stream raced ahead.
By the time we all reached pre-VCE Maths, the gap was obvious.
I wasn’t ready.
They had the skills, techniques, and exposure that I’d never been taught.
It wasn’t that I couldn’t keep up—it was that I’d never been shown how.
That’s when I realised something that still drives me today:
The most experienced teachers and best resources are often reserved for extension classes—and everyone else is left to figure it out through trial and error.
I created this program to change that.
Because Year 7 and 8 aren’t just transition years—they’re where the gap begins.
And they’re also where it can be closed.
My goal is to help students build the habits, thinking strategies, and mathematical foundations that prepare them for high school properly—and set them up to succeed in VCE before it even begins.

Frequently asked questions
How big are the classes?
To keep things interactive and engaging, each class is capped at 8 students max. This ensures every student gets individual attention and can stay actively involved.
What happens if my child misses a class?
No stress — all lesson recordings, class notes, and homework materials are uploaded weekly to the Artin LMS, so students can review or catch up anytime.
Can we attend online?
Yes! While we recommend attending in person for best results, our classes are fully hybrid — students can join live via Zoom if needed.
How are the classes structured?
Each class follows a theory → practice → testing approach:
• In-class learning through structured theory booklets
• Weekly homework to reinforce concepts
• Topic tests every 2–3 weeks to track progress and retention
How much do the classes cost?
Classes are $60 per week (90 minutes), billed by the term (12 weeks).
That’s just $40 per hour for a small-group program led by high-performing tutors.
When are the classes held, and how long are they?
Please contact us for the latest timetable.

Do you offer one-on-one tutoring?
We focus on small-group classes only, but students are welcome to message or check in with their tutor outside class hours for additional support on a reasonable basis.
